Tips for Warming up Before Dance Class

As a dancer I always had my own set warm up that I would do before class, rehearsals, or performances.  It was habit for me to arrive early and work on my own.  My body felt better and I danced better.  As a dance educator, I have not been as good about having a set warm up and kind of wing it depending on how much time I have.  After having kids, getting to the studio early isn’t always easy. All of the extra technology that needs to be ready to go before classes during the pandemic requires extra time before class too.  I recently had a big birthday and making a pre teaching warm up is essential for me to continue to move and take care of my body.  Here are some tips to help you create your own warm up.

Get the blood flowing

Brisk walking, jogging, and prances are all ways to just get everything moving.  As you start to get going you could add some larger arm movements to the mix.  Arm circle swings or swinging across the front of the body.

Think about trouble areas

Do you have body parts that are tight or need extra attention?  If your hamstrings are tight or you have had an ankle injury give these areas some extra love

Circles

Makes circles, start at the top and work your way down. I love a good head and foot circle but circles can be made in between too! It’s a great way to move gently and get everything moving.

Wake up your core

Planks into down dog are a favorite of mine.  Being mindful of engaging your core during your warm up is also a great way to wake that core up.

Roll Out

Great for before and after dancing. I have a large foam roller that I use when I teach virtually from home.  It is a bit large for me to lug around with me.  Tennis balls work great to roll your feet and legs out and they are easy to throw in your bag and go.

Don’t sit in stretches

Walking in off the street and sitting in straddles and splits can be dangerous.  Especially before class think about light stretching, flowing, and breathing through stretches
