How to Plan for Private Lessons

Private lessons can be a great way to take your dancing to the next level. It is an investment in yourself from a monetary aspect, as well as your time and effort. Some planning can help you make the most of your lessons. Here are some tips to help maximize your development.

1. Choose a teacher that will help you grow and reach yours goals.

When choosing a teacher for private lessons you should consider if that teacher will help you grow as a dancer.  Is the teacher able to explain corrections in a way you relate to? Does that teacher push you and set high expectations of what you can do?

2. Talk to your teacher about your goals.

While wanting to improve overall is a goal for most dancers, try to think of specific things you would like to work on during your private lessons.  Do you need help with alignment? Improving speed or accuracy in petite allegro? More attention on execution of pirouettes? Or do you want to work on strength or flexibility?  These goals can change as you go so it is important to keep the lines of communication open with your teacher.

3. Bring a notebook

Whether you write your corrections down during the private lesson or immediately after, this can be a great learning tool.  If you write down your corrections or even notes about how it felt to make a correction you can review before your next class and private lesson.  Making a correction is great but if you forget about it or are inconsistent in fixing it you will not improve your dancing.

4. Be prepared

It is important to be dressed and warmed up before your private lesson starts.  You want to make sure that you make the most of all the time you have with your instructor.  If you are late or not focused you will not get as much out of the lesson as if you had been prepared.  Don’t forget to bring water!

5. Be consistent

This can be hard as scheduling and cost can often times be factors in the amount of private lessons you are able to take.  When possible try to schedule a regular lesson. Consistency will bring better results. Taking a private lesson here or there can help but will not be as effective as a regular lesson.
